Frequenty Asked Questions

How do I get my driving license in Illinois if I am under 18?
In order for you to get your permit you must be 15 and enrolled in a drivers education program. After 4 hours of class you will be given a form allowing you to go to the DMV and take the written portion of test to obtain your permit. After completion of the driver's education class and driving lesson, fulfilling 50 hours of practice driving, holding your permit for 9 months and having turned 16 yrs of age you are eligible to take the road exam to get your driver's license.
Can I enroll in a driver's education program if I am only 14?
Yes, but you must turn 15 by the end of the classroom portion of the program.
What do driver's education programs consist of?
Illinois requires you complete 30 hours of classroom and 12 hours of driving instruction. The 12 hours compromise of 6 hours of driving and 6 hours of observing another student being instructed---our Silver Teen Package. The alternative to the 12 hours would be to take 8 hours of private lessons---our Gold Teen Package.
What documents do I need to get my permit or license?
1.)certified copy of your birth certificate or valid passport or a state ID. 2.)Your social security card. 3.)two proofs of residency, eg. Last report card, last bank statement, utility bill (parent can vouch you live there). 4.)Pay a $20 fee.
When getting your license bring the above along with your original permit and your 50 hour driving log and proof of insurance and registration for the car you will be taking the driving test with. For further clarification please visit
How do the Behind the Wheel (BTW) lessons work?
At Joyce's Driving School if you are enrolled in our silver teen program, which consists of 12 BTW hours you will take four, three-hour lessons. Each lesson is 3 hours long and you will be driving for 1.5 hours and observing another student being instructed for 1.5 hours. Once you have your permit you will log into your Joyce's Driving School account, enter your permit information and then browse through our schedule to see what time works for you. We will pick you up at school or home as long as they are in a reasonable distance of our school.
What happens if I have to miss a classroom class?
No problem, please let your instructor know and they will arrange a time for you to make it up. You are allowed to miss up to four classes, but they must be made up. If you miss more than 4 you will be unenrolled and there will be a $150 re-enrollment fee.
How long do I have to complete my driver's education program?
From the first day of class you have 6 months to complete all your classroom and BTW sessions. Your permit is valid for two years as long as you are in a driver's education program or you have completed the driver's education program. State requires completion of program within 9 months or you may have to retake the program and have your permit revoked.
Do I need my permit when I drive?
Yes, if you do not have your original permit with you, you are not licensed to operate a car. If you do not have it with you for a BTW we will not be able to do the drive and you will be charged a "no-show" fee.
What happens if I miss a BTW?
If you need to change your drive you must give us 72 hours' notice so we can fill your spot. If you cancel within that time frame or you do not show up for the lesson you will be assessed a $50 fee. After you pay your fee you will have to book another BTW.

Is there a missed BTW Fee?
We try to be as flexible as possible with our BTW scheduling but we must keep to a strict schedule so each student can complete their drives in a timely fashion.
Reasons for the fee:
  • If you cancel within 72 hours of your scheduled BTW lesson.
  • If you do not show up for the scheduled drive.
  • The student does not have their original permit with them at the time of the BTW lesson.
Why the fee?
  • In the silver teen program there are two students in the car so each pupil can do their driving portion and their observation portion. If a student does not show up then the other student does not have someone to observe thus they will have to reschedule that portion of their drive. Imagine if it was your child who lost their observation time.
  • If a drive is scheduled, we pay our instructor so if a student does not show up we still pay the instructor.
  • By cancelling a drive too late or by not showing up you have taken a drive time away from another student.
  • We also want to instill accountability and consideration in your child so they will be a responsible driver.
How do I pay my deposit if I don't have a credit card?
We ask that you please enroll in person at our Palatine location, 786 Euclid Ave, Palatine, IL, 60067 during business hours or please call 847-991-9600.
Do you have a sibling discount?
Absolutely, we love siblings and offer a $20 discount! Please call 847-991-9600 to arrange it or let us know the first day of class.
